In Appalachia, the fight against substance abuse is not someone else's problem. It's our problem. It has impacted families, communities, workplaces, and schools. We have all seen the consequences. That is why Red Ribbon Week matters. Not because a banner changes lives, but because conversations do. Relationships do. Education does. Opportunities do. When schools commit to helping students make healthy choices, when families stay engaged, and when communities rally around young people, we begin to break cycles that have existed for far too long. Today, these students helped put up a banner. More importantly, they helped put up a reminder that the next generation does not have to repeat the mistakes of the past.

Buckhannon, WV - As Red Ribbon Week activities get underway, a group of local high school students recently took time to help display a banner promoting drug awareness and prevention on campus.

The effort may seem simple, but the message behind it carries particular significance in Appalachia, where many communities have experienced firsthand the far-reaching impact of substance abuse. Red Ribbon Week serves as a nationwide reminder of the importance of prevention, education, and healthy decision-making for young people. When asked Mr. Sisk had the following comment:

The story of our community is not defined by the challenges we face, but by the people willing to overcome them. Red Ribbon Week reminds us that every student deserves the opportunity to choose a healthy path and pursue a future full of possibilities. When these students hung this banner, they were doing more than promoting an awareness campaign. They were helping send a message that the next generation can break cycles that have affected families and communities for far too long. Schools are just one part of that effort, but it is a responsibility we take seriously every day.

Matthew Sisk, Director of Safety, Technology, and Facilities

By helping prepare their school for Red Ribbon Week, these students demonstrated that prevention efforts are most effective when young people themselves become part of the conversation. Their participation reflects a commitment to creating a school culture that values personal responsibility, informed decision-making, and support for one another.

Throughout the week, students in all Upshur County Schools will take part in activities and discussions designed to encourage healthy lifestyles and raise awareness about the risks associated with substance abuse.

As the banner now hanging on campus reminds students, staff, and visitors, the goal of Red Ribbon Week extends beyond a single event. It is an opportunity to reinforce the idea that every student deserves the knowledge, support, and opportunities needed to pursue a bright and successful future.
