BOE, Buckhannon, WV - As the summer break winds down, school principals across our district are gearing up for the upcoming school year. To ensure they are well-prepared, this group of dedicated administrators are attending a 3-day in-person Principals' Academy.

Strengthening Leadership Skills

The Principals' Academy, held annually, provides an intensive training for both new and returning principals. The goal is to equip them with the latest knowledge, strategies, and tools needed to lead their schools effectively. Here are some of the key highlights planned for the academy:

Leadership with Jimmy Casas

When it comes to transforming school culture and empowering educational leaders, Jimmy Casas stands out at the very top. As a former high-performing principal, he brings practical experience to the table. He will assist to ensure student-centered focus, data-driven decision making, and encourage strong community engagement through his leadership development.

Starting PBIS

In line with the County School's state approved Strategic Plan Upshur County Schools will begin to address behavior through Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS). The PBIS framework encourages student responsibility by setting clear expectations. When implemented fully, PBIS has a proven record of success in improving academic achievement, school climate, and social-emotional wellbeing.

Marshall University

Dr. Amy Carlson, WV ECPBIS Coordinator for WV Behavior/Mental Health TA Center at the WV Autism Training Center at Marshall University, will be presenting a session to Upshur County school leaders on how to avoid power struggles with students and how to help streamline transitions for struggling students.

Upshur Leadership Presentations

Central Office Directors of Upshur County Schools will be presenting various topics to the principals as well to ensure that at the school level expectations are kept. Transportation, Facilities, Student Services, Safety & Technology, Curriculum, Special Education, and Federal Programs will have present about the latest updates from their areas.
