Members of Buckhannon-Upshur’s Future Business Leaders of America traveled to the campus of Marshall University to attend the State Leadership Conference March 13-14. Students enjoyed guest speakers, who are forerunners in marketing, entrepreneurship, financial education, and financial technology. Dr. Sara Lewis-Stankus, Deputy Superintendent with the Department of Education was also a speaker. She visited our table and spoke with the students.
Aaliyah Cameron, Bradly Helmick, Jessica Williams, Madolyn Long, Regina Petrokovich, and Savannah Lashmit were able to attend a few workshops on credit scores, financial debt, EMS simulation unit, persuasive presentations, and designing ideas to fight real world problems. Advisor Christy Dean helped time during the performance competitions. There was also time to take a tour of Marshall University’s campus. Recreation time in the evening was spent in Marshall’s recreation center swimming, climbing the rock wall, playing basketball, or playing ping pong.
One of the highlights of the conference is the competitive side of FBLA. Students can compete in a variety of topics. Events can be individual, groups, presentations, performance, or written objective. All six who attended the conference chose to take an objective test and some took two. We had one member enter a performance competition. The objective tests were proctored by Danielle Rexroad, who ensured test security. Students did not know their score or if they placed until the second day of the conference.
Aaliyah Cameron placed 4th in Advertising
Bradly Helmick placed 3rd in Accounting I and 2nd in Accounting II
Jessica Williams placed 3rd in Cybersecurity
Madolyn Long placed 1st in Accounting 1 and 4th in impromptu speaking
Savannah Lashmit placed 3rd in Accounting II
Regina Petrokovich took the Health Services Administration tested but did not make the top 4
Congratulations to everyone! We are working on details to attend the FBLA National Leadership Conference in Atlanta at the end of June!
