B-UHS Introduction to Agriculture students have a unique opportunity to learn about the poultry industry. To start the unit, students research different breeds of chickens. After research, students select breeds then the order is placed. The day-old chicks arrived in early March.  Students were responsible for the daily care and maintenance of the pullets (female chicks). The hands-on experience in animal husbandry teaches students about the importance of animal welfare and attention to detail. Laying hens are a popular choice for this purpose as they are relatively easy to care for and mature quickly which also makes them desirable for potential customers.

B-U Alum Aaron Harris got his start in the auction business as a sophomore at the chicken auction. He continues to provide his services each year and encourages FFA members and supporters to stay involved with Upshur FFA. Auctioning off chicks to the public not only raises funds for the agriculture program, it  provides community members with an opportunity to raise their own backyard flock. However, it's important to ensure that the chicks are healthy and well-cared. The Animal Production class provided buyers with adequate information on how to care for birds.

Overall, raising laying hens in an educational setting can be a rewarding and enriching experience for both students and the wider community. Thanks again to everyone who supports Upshur FFA!
